Pimma was numb with shock and terror. She had seen her father die horribly; his last agonizing moments prolonged by Bionelu’s evil words. Her father’s murderer was even now dragging her roughly up the stone stairs of the castle. She wished she were dead. She likely soon would be, and she fought to hide her fear.

“Stop sniveling or I shall cut your vocal cords.”

She was trembling so hard that her teeth rattled together because as much as she wished she were dead she did not want to die as her Da had died.

As the sorcerer dragged her across a wide stone court, she saw people peering out from behind columns, hiding in terror. None of them would risk their lives to help her.

Why did he want her? Why not kill her outright? The answer came when they reached a broad doorway of iron. Inside were hundreds of shelves filled with bottles and pots. Her father would have known what all of this was, and it would have thrilled him. At the same time, she was glad she did not recognize the room’s contents. Maybe she would be even more afraid than she was already.

Her fear solidified into terror as Queen Quiana stalked toward her, eyes as fiery as her hair. She looked at Pimma and sniffed, smelling her as one smells a basket of onions, searching for the rotten one.

“She does not smell like a dragon,” the queen roared. She grabbed a handful of Pimma’s hair and yanked her out of Bionelu’s arms. “Why did you smell like a dragon?”

“I know not w-w-w-what you mean, your majesty,” she stammered.

Queen Quiana shook her by the hair, beating her fist against Pimma’s ear with every shake. “What were you selling?”

“My father sold herbs to make people better. He, he was a doctor. He just sold simple herbs. Nothing harmful, nothing magical.”

The queen pulled her up and looked at her face. Their eyes met and Pimma froze, as a rabbit freezes when a hawk catches sight of it. She knew that this was the moment she would die.

The queen threw her to the floor and stepped over her, skirt swirling.

“I don't know what you expected from her, Queen Quiana.” Bionelu said. “She's just a peasant. I brought her up here because her father had some interesting magic and I thought maybe she had some residual magic that I could dig for and use.”

Pimma shuddered. “Dig” implied that he knew exactly how to find whatever it was he thought she had. She knew she had nothing magical about her, except that sometimes she knew when things would happen. She opened her eyes and froze. On the floor next to her was one of Tallya’s dolls. They had captured her friend, even though she’d seen her flee with Curran. She glanced up and her eyes met Queen Quiana’s. The queen looked down at the doll, then at Pimma, and she smiled.
